Billing Estimates

Looking to know your costs before your appointment? Billing estimates are available by request within 3 days.

CU Medicine can provide good faith estimates for select patient services and procedures. This estimate helps you understand your costs before you receive care.

  • Contact us by phone, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mountain Time, by calling 303-493-7061.
  • You provide a description of the procedure and we will return an estimate within 3 days.
  • Estimates may be quoted with or without insurance. With insurance, the estimate will include your deductible and out-of-pocket maximum.

Estimates do not guarantee service. They also do not include non-CU Medicine facility fees, which may be determined when you receive service. Patient estimates will not include cost estimates for special discount self-pay packages. Please contact your specific clinic for an estimate on a self-pay package.

Surprise Medical Billing

Patients have legal protections against certain unexpected medical bills.

If you get care outside of your insurance network – like emergency treatment at an out-of-network hospital or seeing an out-of-network provider at an in-network facility – federal and Colorado laws protect you from surprise or balance billing.

When these protections apply, you usually can’t be billed more than your plan’s in-network cost-sharing amount. This includes copays, coinsurance and deductibles. Your insurance company must treat these services as in-network. This affects how much you owe.

If you think you’ve been incorrectly billed for out-of-network charges, reach out to the CU Medicine billing department. You can email us at BillingQuestions@cumedicine.us or call 303-493-7700.

Visit our Surprise Medical Billing page for further information.

For details about your rights under Colorado law, check the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies Division of Insurance website.

For more on your rights under federal law, check the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services website.

Why You May Receive Multiple Bills

Depending on the services you receive, you may receive more than one bill related to your visit.

Examples may include:

  • Professional (physician or advanced practice provider) charges for services provided by your doctor or specialist
  • Facility charges related to clinic or hospital resources, such as those at University of Colorado Hospital or Children’s Hospital Colorado, used during your care

Each organization bills separately for the services it provides. If you have questions about a specific charge, call our billing department at 303-493-7700.

Common Clinical Fees

Some clinical services have standard fees for specific types of visits or procedures. Our Common Clinical Fees page provides more information about these charges.
